So, one of the things that has been distracting me from posting on this blog is the fact that I found a great ukulele club. I’ve been spending a lot of time attending, preparing and doing other stuff related to the club.
At some point someone brought a cajon to one of the meetings and I couldn’t believe how cool it sounded. It’s a great kick and snare drum sound built into one portable little box. Other than symbols I can’t really understand why anyone would lug a huge drum kit around when this is an option. Of course I had to have one. After a bit of shopping I put them starting at about $120 and like anything, you can go as high as you like on the top end. (more…)
Okay, one last Christmas song before I leave Ohio and get back to the real world.
I love good uke songbooks, especially ones full of Christmas songs, especially ones full of good Christmas songs hand picked with love, and I love finding cool new songs to add to my songbook. Christmas For Cowboys is just such a song. (more…)
Has Anybody Seem My Gal… Girl? Five Foot Two? Whatever you call it here’s a great old song that is perfect for the uke. A quintessential example of that fur coat flapper, old microphone guy, 23 skidoo genre. Even better on Grampy’s panjolele. (more…)
A friend of mine got a uke for Christmas and asked me to put a lesson together for her. This was my outline, I thought I’d share. (more…)
When I first decided to buy a uke it didn’t take long for me to realize I was alone in a big world. I’ve played guitar forever and I’ve always had lots of guitar playing friends and there have always been lots of local resources (guitar stores) for guitar players. I researched and bought my first uke without any mentorship or local test facilities. I was pretty careful, a little lucky and it worked out pretty well but… at the time I vowed to seek out and find like minded others in my area for face to face real time interaction. (more…)
I decided to spend this year’s birthday money on an Outdoor soprano in “natural”. I’ve wanted one since I heard they made a clear uke and I love the idea that it’s built to be extremely robust and durable. I love it. Solid 2 thumbs up from me on the overall. It’s a bit quiet, probably because I’m used to tenors. It’s a bit clicky, which has been the case for all the plastic ukes I play. It does have high frets which will cause it to go out of tune if you’re not gentle but that’s not an issue for me. So I’m really happy with how it plays and sounds and I love the fact that I can just put it in my messenger bag with all my other stuff (so without a case), take it anywhere and not worry about beating it up. I’ll do a more thorough review on the gear page at some point… I promise.
Welp, I know it’s been a while and it’s probably not the best form to be posting a Christmas song the day after Christmas but… I’m in the middle of the Ohio family visit and it’s the first time in a long time that I’ve felt like I had time to post. Maybe posting my annual Christmas fave AFTER the season is done will be my thing.
This one has definitely earned a place in my heart and a permanent spot in my Christmas Songbook. (more…)
